Energy Systems at Middlewood: ALTERNATIVE ENERGY The use of wind and solar power combined with energy efficient appliances reduces the harmful effects from conventional power production. |
| A Proven Windturbine provides power for the Study Centre. Rod and Jane's House and the farm buildings are powered by a 1.28 Kw photo voltaic system and a Proven WT2500 2.5 Kw wind turbine. The Energy System for the farm and farm house has been part funded by DTI Clear Skies Renewable Energy Households Grant, Photovoltaic Demonstartion Programme, EU Leader+, DEFRA EAGGF and Lancashire Economic Partnership. |
| A hydro electric turbine is being set up by Stuart, Ben and friends (see their dedicated website at http://www.fraser1.demon.co.uk ). Small Photo-voltaic systems are planned for the School and Camping barn. These will use low energy light bulbs based on LEDs (less than 1 watt used in power consumption). |
| Hot water is provided from wood burning, solar panels and windmill electricity dump circuits. Where possible we use low energy appliances to reduce the need for power. The study centre has an Osier high mass wood burning stove which weighs around 1.5 tonnes and acts like a massive storage heater. This has been designed to burn very efficiently and only needs lighting for about 2 hours per day. |
